The May 1st holiday, a significant date in Gran Canaria's labor calendar, will bring about substantial changes in supermarket operating hours. While many citizens will use the day to protest or enjoy a long weekend, it is crucial to know which establishments will remain open to avoid inconvenience.
Major distribution chains, such as Mercadona, will maintain their usual policy of closing on Sundays and holidays nationwide, including this day. Similarly, Alcampo will also close its doors. Other large retailers like Lidl, Carrefour, and DIA will opt for selective openings, with some of their stores operating on reduced hours and others remaining completely closed. Consumers are advised to check the official store locators of each brand before leaving home.
In contrast, the Canarian chains HiperDino and SuperDino will offer specific openings in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Stores such as SuperDino Sagasta and SuperDino Triana will be operational with extended hours, from 9:00 to 22:00. However, other common locations like Miller bajo, 7 Palmas, or El Muelle will remain closed. Additionally, in tourist areas or high-traffic zones, some stores of this chain may open exceptionally, a common practice in the archipelago.
Meanwhile, SPAR Gran Canaria emerges as a reliable alternative, keeping several establishments open during the holiday. Examples include the store on Avenida Primero de Mayo, which will operate continuously, and others located on streets such as Albareda, Almatriche Pi y Margall, Ángel Guimerá, Cádiz, Benartemi, Bravo Murillo, as well as in areas like the Pilar neighborhood, Escaleritas, and Las Canteras (Ripoche and Tenerife or Bernardo de la Torre). The chain has a large number of stores with special hours for Sundays and holidays.
Regarding shopping centers in Gran Canaria, their leisure and dining areas will remain open, but shops and stores will keep their doors closed. This will allow visitors to enjoy a stroll and window shop, though without the possibility of making purchases in the stores.
