During his address to the Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mariano Hernández Zapata, Ramos stressed that moving towards a more sustainable energy model is not only an environmental imperative but also an urgent social and economic necessity. He highlighted that the current slow pace of this process is the main obstacle to realizing its benefits.
“"The real problem is not advancing fast enough in that transition."
The deputy for La Gomera warned that excessive reliance on imported oil exposes Canarian families to fluctuations in international crises, directly impacting electricity costs. He noted that a family in the Canary Islands pays between 55 and 65 euros monthly for typical consumption, despite a drop in wholesale prices in 2024 and an anticipated rebound in 2025, amidst high geopolitical volatility.
Ramos pointed out that the Canary Islands still depend on fossil fuels for over 79% of their electricity generation, underscoring the urgency of reducing external dependence and strengthening the archipelago's energy sovereignty. He mentioned that the Canary Islands Energy Transition Plan aims for 60% renewable energy penetration by 2030, but currently stands at around 20%, preventing the full benefits from being reflected in household economies.
“"The energy transition cannot become a factor of inequality. On the contrary, it must be a tool to improve people's lives."
The ASG spokesperson outlined four priorities for an effective energy transition: accelerating the implementation of renewables and storage systems, simplifying procedures and ensuring the execution of available funds, decisively promoting self-consumption and energy communities, and strengthening social protection policies alongside energy-efficient housing rehabilitation. He cited La Gomera as an example, which already has renewable production capacity but needs improved transport and evacuation infrastructure. He positively assessed the submarine interconnection with Tenerife as a crucial step forward.
