The Guardia Civil is investigating a possible brake system failure as the primary cause of a bus accident involving British tourists in San Sebastián de La Gomera. The incident, which occurred on the GM-2 road near El Revolcadero, has left one person dead and 27 injured, four of whom are in serious condition.
According to Juan Luis Navarro, insular director of the General State Administration, the driver attempted to control the situation after detecting the brake malfunction, but the bus ultimately plunged down the hillside. Navarro emphasized that the vehicle stopped before being completely thrown off, which prevented even more catastrophic consequences.
“"Fortunately, it stopped before being thrown off, otherwise it could have been much more serious."
Among the seriously injured are two men, aged 73 and 42 respectively, who suffered multiple traumas and were airlifted to La Candelaria Hospital. The remaining 25 injured individuals were treated at Virgen de Guadalupe Hospital in La Gomera, two of whom also sustained serious injuries.
Numerous personnel and resources were involved in the rescue efforts, including two medical helicopters, several ambulances, medical and nursing staff from the San Sebastián health center, the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) of the Government of the Canary Islands, a Guardia Civil rescue helicopter, and resources from the Cabildo, Spanish Red Cross, Civil Protection, AEA, Local Police, and Valle Gran Rey Firefighters.
The Cabildo has restored traffic on the GM-2 road, although drivers have been asked to exercise extreme caution as specialized personnel will continue maintenance and safety tasks in the affected area throughout the afternoon.
