Following the occupation of the municipality, severe repression ensued, including arrests, summary courts-martial, imprisonment, and executions of residents and officials linked to the defense of constitutional order.
Iniciativa por La Gomera emphasizes that this episode holds extraordinary historical, political, and social relevance, symbolizing the defense of democratic legality and constitutional values. Its recognition aligns with the obligations set forth in Law 20/2022 on Democratic Memory and the Law 5/2018 on Historical Memory of the Canary Islands, which mandate public administrations to preserve, investigate, and disseminate historical memory.
The group insists that this initiative is not confrontational but rather an exercise in democratic memory based on truth, justice, reparation, and guarantees of non-repetition.
Iniciativa por La Gomera proposes the institutional recognition of the 'Fogueo' as an integral episode of the democratic memory of Vallehermoso, due to its historical significance as an act of defense for republican legality and democratic values.
Furthermore, it is proposed to promote historical research in collaboration with universities, specialists, and memory advocacy groups to deepen the understanding of the events of July 24, 1936, and their subsequent consequences in the municipality.
The proposal also includes studying the creation of a memorial space through the installation of a plaque or interpretive panel in a significant location in Vallehermoso, dedicated to remembering the events and the repressed individuals.
Similarly, the institutionalization of an annual commemorative event every July 24 is promoted, along with the development of educational and outreach programs aimed at schools and the public to foster knowledge of this historical episode and its democratic values.
It is also proposed to encourage the collection and preservation of oral testimonies, historical documentation, and graphic material related to the 'Fogueo' for incorporation into the municipal archive.
Finally, collaboration is requested from the Cabildo Insular de La Gomera and the Government of the Canary Islands for the development of research, conservation, and dissemination activities concerning this historical episode.
