The Cabildo de La Gomera, in cooperation with the University of La Laguna, has defined a new offering of three university micro-credentials for the La Gomera Campus 2026, focusing on social inclusion and artificial intelligence.

This educational initiative, resulting from a citizen consultation process, seeks to consolidate a training strategy that responds to the needs of the Gomera population. The new micro-credentials will address physical-sports activities in social inclusion contexts and the use of Artificial Intelligence in the workplace and academic environment.

"The participatory process has allowed us to design an academic itinerary that faithfully responds to the concerns and needs of the Gomera citizenry, thus being a strategic tool to enhance employability and professional specialization flexibly."

Casimiro Curbelo · Island President
The island president, Casimiro Curbelo, highlighted that this participatory approach ensures the academic offer aligns with local demands. He also noted that these micro-credentials will be integrated into the development of the La Gomera Campus 2026, a project that transforms the concept of the former Summer University into a continuous training program throughout the year, with the collaboration of the University of La Laguna and the island's municipalities.
For her part, the island's Minister of Education, Rosa Elena García, explained that these micro-credentials will allow students to certify real competencies through rigorous academic evaluation. She emphasized the accessibility of these qualifications, as they are open to both university graduates and those without a degree.
The public consultation offered citizens the opportunity to choose from twenty flexible and accessible training actions, with a practical focus on 21st-century competencies. Among those selected are the Micro-credential in Introduction to AI and its practical application to the work environment, which aims to foster advanced digital literacy and the ethical use of AI tools.
Additionally, the Micro-credential in AI for the development of academic activities is included, aimed at students and professionals in the educational field to critically and strategically leverage the potential of this technology in teaching and learning processes. Finally, the offer includes the Micro-credential in Physical-Sports Activities in Social Inclusion Contexts – Basic Level, which focuses on providing participants with didactic strategies to promote the participation of people with disabilities and foster respectful coexistence.
