The Cabildo de La Gomera has greenlit an investment exceeding 16 million euros for the new road conservation and maintenance service, extending until 2029.

This decision, made during a plenary session, marks the beginning of the process to award a crucial contract aimed at ensuring the safety and functionality of the island's road network. The base bidding budget amounts to 16,377,825.83 euros, allocated for ordinary conservation and road viability of the island-owned roads.

"This is a strategic investment for La Gomera, because it allows us to guarantee roads in optimal safety conditions and respond to the mobility needs of citizens and those who visit the island."

Casimiro Curbelo · President of the Cabildo de La Gomera
The contract will have an initial duration of three years, with the possibility of extension for up to five years. Casimiro Curbelo, president of the Cabildo, emphasized the importance of this measure, highlighting its role in improving safety and addressing the mobility needs of both residents and visitors to La Gomera.
This new contract will continue the current service, whose extension ends in August 2026. Curbelo noted that the current planning is more aligned with the economic reality and service needs, incorporating improvements to enhance its effectiveness. The service will include continuous maintenance, conservation, cleaning, signage, and incident response on the road network, ensuring adequate circulation throughout the year.
These tasks will range from clearing landslides and cleaning verges to replacing deteriorated elements and specific interventions for road safety. The contracting of this service is crucial due to the insufficient internal resources to comprehensively maintain the more than 200 kilometers of roads on the island, especially in emergencies or unforeseen incidents.

"We are talking about an essential service that operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is fundamental for territorial cohesion and the economic development of La Gomera."

Casimiro Curbelo · President of the Cabildo de La Gomera
With the plenary approval, the Cabildo will now initiate the bidding process through an open procedure subject to harmonized regulation, which will allow selecting the most suitable offer based on technical and economic criteria, thereby improving the quality of service provided to citizens.
