The research project Mulagua Study: a Spanish cohort of kidney health continues its development in La Gomera. Following its implementation in the northern municipalities of the island, it now extends to San Sebastián de La Gomera, where tests included in this pioneering population study have already commenced.
This initiative is financially supported by the Carlos III Health Institute and the Cabildo de La Gomera. Additionally, it receives backing from the Management of Socio-sanitary Services of La Gomera, the municipalities of Vallehermoso, Agulo, Hermigua, and San Sebastián de La Gomera, the University of La Laguna and its General Foundation, as well as the European Union through the DOKY project (Diabetes, Obesity & The Kidney – 101079207).
The main objective of this study is to gain in-depth knowledge about the kidney health status of La Gomera's inhabitants. The results obtained will be crucial for designing early prevention strategies against kidney diseases, a health issue that, often silent, affects millions of people worldwide.
The study is characterized by being a simple, safe, and risk-free process for participants. It includes a combination of clinical analyses, detailed surveys, and a non-invasive test to assess kidney function. To date, over 700 people have contributed with their participation. To ensure adequate representation across all age groups, a special appeal is made to the population between 18 and 50 years old, whose collaboration is crucial for the project's success.
