The Cabildo de La Gomera and the Acuorum Foundation have launched the environmental education initiative 'Every Drop Counts', a project aimed at raising awareness among island schoolchildren about the strategic importance of water saving.

This activity, inspired by popular escape games, has allowed nearly 130 students from various schools to actively learn about environmental challenges related to water. The methodology used promotes critical thinking and cooperation through solving riddles and collaborative challenges.

"These types of tools are fundamental for integrating key content about island geology and hydrology into the educational curriculum."

A spokesperson for the Cabildo de La Gomera emphasized the relevance of these tools for incorporating essential knowledge about the island's geology and hydrology into student education. They explained that by familiarizing themselves with the functioning of aquifers, dams, and the historical use of wells and galleries, young people better understand the vulnerability of water resources to threats such as climate change and desertification.

"Raising students' awareness about the island's hydrological cycle and the importance of the laurisilva forest as a natural sponge is essential to guarantee a sustainable future on the island."

For its part, the management of the Acuorum Foundation highlighted the effectiveness of the project's playful methodology, which has presented 20 challenges adapted to the reality of the archipelago. This initiative has enabled students to analyze their water footprint closely, discovering surprising data such as the 2,700 liters of water needed to manufacture a t-shirt or the 2,400 liters for a hamburger.

"The objective is to empower schoolchildren in responsible consumption, showing them technological solutions such as desalination and the reuse of greywater."

The activity was carried out itinerantly in educational centers such as CEO Santiago Apóstol de Alajeró, CEO Mario Lhermet Vallier de Hermigua, CEO Vallehermoso, and CEO Nereida Díaz Abreu in Valle Gran Rey. In each center, three consecutive sessions were held, involving various classes in water conservation as a vital element for human health and the maintenance of ecosystem services.
This initiative is part of a collaboration agreement between the Cabildo de La Gomera and the Acuorum Foundation, focused on promoting awareness, dissemination, and recovery of the living memory linked to water, understood as an essential element for the life, culture, and identity of the archipelago.
