The Minister of the Presidency, Nieves Lady Barreto, and the Minister of Agriculture, Narvay Quintero, met this Thursday to finalize the details of the subsidy order for the Strategic Plan for the Common Agricultural Policy (PAC). This order is aimed at restoring agricultural potential in La Palma, affected by the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano.
Minister Barreto explained that the PAC must have sufficient funds to meet the needs of farmers who are already rebuilding their farms. For his part, Minister Quintero highlighted that a significant novelty of the call is the incorporation of the regulatory bases, which will streamline administrative procedures and adapt the measure to the exceptional circumstances of rebuilding agricultural holdings.
The objective of this support line is to facilitate the reconstruction and resumption of productive and economic activity for agricultural holding owners. After receiving compensation for the loss of land value buried by lava, they will be able to access financial support from the Ministry to cover the necessary actions to complete the reconstruction of their plots.
The meeting, attended by the Vice-Minister for Economic and Social Recovery of La Palma, Pedro Afonso, and the Director General of Agriculture, Juan Ramón Rodríguez Marín, also addressed the formula for the Ministry of Agriculture to finalize the payment for ash removal.
Both ministers reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of the Canary Islands to continue supporting the approximately 6,000 farmers in La Palma. These farmers made an extraordinary effort during the three months of the volcanic eruption to continuously remove ash from their crops, a fundamental task for maintaining agricultural activity and preserving thousands of jobs.
Minister Nieves Lady Barreto concluded by stating that the Government of the Canary Islands is allocating extraordinary funds to cover these needs, pending the 300 million euros to be received from the Spanish Government.
