The team from Cafetería de Volcano Teide has been recognized at GastroCanarias 2026, achieving second place in the prestigious Best Barraquito of the Canary Islands Competition. The creation, made at over 2,300 meters altitude, draws inspiration from the iconic sea of clouds and the unique volcanic landscape of Teide and the island of La Palma.
This barraquito, featuring coffee from Don Manuel roasted in La Palma, ranked among the best creations in the archipelago. The recipe, designed to achieve a perfect balance of coffee, liqueur, milk, and aromas, paid homage to the natural environment of Teide.
The championship, one of the most followed competitions at GastroCanarias, brought together a dozen participants. Each contestant had 15 minutes to prepare and present their creation to an expert jury.
The proposal from Volcano Teide emerged as a tribute, from the heart of Teide, to the first barraquito served at the historic Cafetería Imperial in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. During the presentation, it was highlighted how the essential ingredients—coffee, condensed milk, Licor 43, frothed milk, cinnamon, and lemon—remain the same, but the technique, balance, product quality, and presentation have significantly evolved.
Luis Martínez, the creator, explained the objective of achieving a harmonious combination where each flavor could be appreciated with equal intensity, from the specialty organic coffee to the Licor 43, milk, cinnamon, and lemon zest.
The Volcano Teide barraquito was born in the cafeteria located next to the base station of the Teide Cable Car, at an altitude of 2,356 meters. Its meticulous presentation included milk foam evoking the characteristic sea of clouds, while cinnamon and lemon zest provided aroma and a visual nod to the volcanic surroundings.
