The Plenary of the Parliament of the Canary Islands rejected this Tuesday, with votes from the governing coalition parties –CC, PP, ASG, and AHI– and the abstention of Vox, the public disclosure of financial aid received by those affected by the volcanic eruption in La Palma.
Socialist deputy Alicia Vanoostende denounced the government's attitude, accusing it of "doing the impossible to avoid" providing a list of public aid. "They have changed arguments, sought excuses, and erected obstacles, and they have lost every legal battle," she stated, recalling that both the Chamber's Board and the legal services had ruled in her favor.
Vanoostende called for rejection of the government's "blocking attitude" towards the work of deputies and demanded the documentation be handed over, citing the "determination and insistence" of the Minister of the Presidency, Lady Barreto, to ensure "no one knows what is happening." The deputy criticized the regional government's "opacity and silence," questioning "why so much fear of transparency regarding the reconstruction of La Palma."
The socialist parliamentarian emphasized that "no minister can decide what information the Chamber knows and what is hidden" and announced that the fight for the information would continue through judicial channels. "When a government stops being accountable, democracy is what suffers," she concluded.
For its part, the deputy spokesperson for Vox, Paula Jover, explained that her group abstained because, while sharing the resolution's content, they believe that "support should be given to all parliamentary groups and not just to those who support the government, the majority ones, or those seated at the table."
