The Popular Group in the Cabildo de La Palma, through councillor Miguel Perdigón, has urged the Culture department to strengthen institutional support for the Fiesta de las Cruces y los Mayos, a tradition it considers at risk.
During a plenary session, Perdigón reiterated his concern, already expressed the previous year, about the need to act in advance to ensure the next edition of this deeply rooted celebration on the island of La Palma.
The councillor highlighted the effort of groups and residents who, selflessly, keep the tradition alive in various municipalities. However, he regretted that this civic commitment does not always receive adequate support from administrations, resulting in scarce or non-existent aid.
“
"Very few people are sustaining something that is part of our identity. People who start working several months in advance, dedicating time and effort completely selflessly."
Perdigón also pointed out the lack of promotion and initiatives that encourage participation and attract visitors, contributing to a progressive loss of interest in these significant dates.
To revitalize the festivity, the councillor of the Popular Group proposed concrete measures such as gastronomic routes, guided tours, incentive sealing systems, and promotional campaigns that enhance both the cultural value and the economic impact of the tradition. Furthermore, he requested information on the status of the procedure to declare the festivity as an Asset of Cultural Interest, seeking to advance its protection and recognition.
“
"We have the responsibility to protect, care for, and promote what makes us unique as an island. Our traditions are part of our identity and deserve decisive support."
