The Oncohematology Unit at the Hospital Universitario Doctor José Molina Orosa in Lanzarote celebrated its twentieth anniversary last Friday, October 16th, with a gala at the Monumento al Campesino.

The event gathered patients, families, association representatives, and professionals to recall the unit's beginnings, review achievements, and give a voice to those who have contributed to its history. Since its establishment in 2006, the unit has treated 7,607 patients, bringing specialized care closer to the island's population and reducing the need for travel.
During the gala, professionals such as Orlando Olivares, the first supervisor, and nurses Fatma Wade and Shaila Romero shared memories of the service's launch. Some of the first doctors to lead the unit also participated via video, including hematologist José Manuel Calvo, who offered his perspective on the early days and the evolution of oncological care on the island.
Patients also shared their experiences, highlighting "human quality," "care," and "trust" in the healthcare professionals, who consider emotional needs alongside treatments. The event was attended by Erasmo García, Director of the Health Area of Lanzarote, Luis Carlos Moreno, Medical Director of the hospital, and Teresa Salagre, Nursing Director.
The celebration included a musical performance by the association Acompañar and an artistic creation by Ivan Témpera as a tribute to cancer patients.
The unit, which began its activity in 2006, has evolved significantly, incorporating radiotherapy three years ago. This advancement has expanded the treatment options available on the island, which previously required travel to other islands like Gran Canaria.
