The Minister of Health, Esther Monzón, reiterated this Wednesday, September 30th, in the Health Commission of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, that the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) will maintain the identity and care model of the Insular Hospital of Lanzarote. This center, specialized in geriatric care, is considered a pioneer and benchmark in Spain for comprehensive care for the island's elderly population.
Monzón highlighted the "enormous care, historical, heritage, and sentimental value" of the Insular Hospital for Lanzarote, emphasizing that any reform requires careful study of its structural, functional, and regulatory conditions. "We want to make every decision knowing well what it implies," she stated, assuring that decisions will be made "with technical criteria and thinking of the people".
In this context, the Master Plan for Health Infrastructures of the Lanzarote Health Area, which includes the future of the Insular Hospital, will be presented soon. This plan will cover the entire network of health centers on the island, including the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, the Insular Hospital itself, and local health centers and clinics.
The Minister explained that the future of the Insular Hospital is part of a "holistic vision," as decisions made for one hospital affect the other and, consequently, the healthcare model for the entire island. The document will offer a technical analysis of all possible scenarios for specialized care, with the Insular Hospital as a key piece of Lanzarote's healthcare network. All aspects included will be institutionally validated to prioritize actions and set implementation timelines.
