Casimiro Curbelo, spokesperson for the Gomera Socialist Group (ASG) parliamentary group, has called on the Canary Islands Government to promote the necessary technical and administrative solutions for the improvement of the Puntallana jetty in San Sebastián de La Gomera. Curbelo considers this action a priority for reasons of safety, accessibility, and protection of the island's heritage.
During his speech at the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Curbelo recalled that the Budget Law of the Autonomous Community for 2026 includes a budget of one million euros allocated to this project. He stressed that these funds should allow progress in the drafting of the project and the execution of the necessary works.
The ASG parliamentary spokesperson explained the profound historical, religious, and cultural connection of Puntallana with the people of La Gomera, as it is the site of the hermitage housing Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, the island's patron saint. He also recalled that in August it will be 84 years since the jetty was built by the local residents themselves.
Curbelo warned of the urgency to act, especially after the damage caused by a storm that left land access impassable and made sea access difficult. "Land access is blocked, sea access has difficulties because this jetty does not meet the conditions," he stated, insisting on the need for institutional cooperation and respect for the Puntallana Special Natural Reserve.
The ASG leader clarified that the action does not involve a new infrastructure or an expansion, but rather an intervention compatible with the protection of the natural space, aimed at ensuring the safety of pilgrims and visitors, especially with the upcoming celebration of the lustral festivals in 2028.
Therefore, he proposed formalizing an agreement between the Canary Islands Government's Ministry of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility and the La Gomera Island Council to unblock procedures and make the investment in a small jetty viable.
Curbelo explained that the action responds to a clear general interest, not only for people's safety but also for the symbolic, historical, religious, and cultural value of the place.
