A local artist, with over three decades of experience in designing and creating festive decorations for the municipality, is the mastermind behind 'Gáldar en Flor'. This spring celebration, running from last Thursday until May 24, fills Capitán Quesada street and the surroundings of Santiago square with color and splendor.
“"When they see everything set up, people from the municipality stop me to congratulate me and tell me they really liked it."
More than 15,000 flowers are complemented by animal figures such as giraffes, monkeys, and elephants, as well as festive elements like hot air balloons, Ferris wheels, and carousels, where children can take photos. The combination of these elements, conceived by the artist and a key collaborator, creates a magnificent floral corridor starting at the Gáldar Town Hall and extending along Capitán Quesada street.
Varieties such as geraniums, ferns, daisies, and petunias, supplied by up to four nurseries, have been selected to stage this year's theme. The artist explains that the inspiration was to represent the traditional village festivals of Gáldar, incorporating details from Africa and Holland on Capitán Quesada street.
Gáldar hosts two main floral events: the 'Flower Week' in December, coinciding with Christmas decorations, and 'Gáldar en Flor' in spring. Both initiatives are organized by the Department of Parks and Gardens of the Gáldar City Council. This year, the collaboration of nurseries like Godoy S.L. and Poinsettias de Canarias S.L., along with companies such as Corsua and Canaragua Medio Ambiente, ensures the maintenance of the flowers for almost a month in the historic center.
The artist, who began his career at the City Council in the 90s, has been responsible for the artistic area of the consistory for over 30 years. His work includes designing floats for Carnival, the Santiago festivities, the Three Kings parade, and Gay Pride, extending his creativity to various celebrations in the north of the island.
