The Piso Firme neighborhood in Gáldar has held the twenty-seventh edition of its traditional Onion Festival, bringing together hundreds of attendees to showcase this iconic local crop.

The event, organized by the Gáldar City Council in collaboration with the Agricultural Extension Agency, served to recognize the work of local producers. During the festival, the increase in this year's production was highlighted, reaching nearly 800 tons, surpassing figures from previous years.
The program included awards for the heaviest individual onions and batches, covering both white and red varieties. Additionally, a culinary competition was held focusing on potato omelets made with local onions, evaluating criteria such as texture and cooking point.
Local authorities emphasized the ongoing efforts to obtain the Designation of Origin, a step aimed at ensuring generational renewal and improving conditions for farmers. This initiative complements the recent registration of traditional varieties in the official registry of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
