This new informational resource, strategically located at the Sardina cable house, summarizes the importance of the submarine cable inaugurated in 1929. This infrastructure first connected Gran Canaria and Tenerife, marking a turning point in the archipelago's telecommunications.
The installed signage allows residents and visitors to understand the historical context of this event and the crucial role that Sardina de Gáldar played in the development of Canarian communications.
Through this initiative, the council enhances the historical and cultural heritage of the municipality, particularly Sardina. The area also houses the Aula de Mar (Sea Classroom), a resource inaugurated two years ago that details the historical significance of the Port of Sardina from periods predating the construction of the Port of La Luz.
The objective is for citizens to learn about this anniversary.
The visit to Sardina beach to oversee the installation was attended by the mayor of Gáldar, Teodoro Sosa, accompanied by the first deputy mayor, Julio Mateo Castillo, the Councilor for Tourism, Ulises Miranda Guerra, and other members of the municipal corporation. The initiative was proposed by Rafael Pérez Jiménez, a professor of Telecommunications Engineering at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, who also provided advice during the process.
