The incident occurred late Sunday afternoon when a young user, still a minor, performed a dunk on one of the low-height basketball hoops on the court located on Panamá street in Costa Teguise. The hoop detached from its base, falling onto the athlete and causing several injuries. As a precautionary measure, the City Council has opted to close the facility to correct the structural failure, although the police tape marking the entrance can be easily bypassed.
The young man was taken to a health center, where he was diagnosed with injuries to his leg, neck, and shoulder. He is expected to need crutches for a few days and is anticipated to recover in time for the start of the new school year.
It is noteworthy that this sports facility, which had been reopened at the end of July after a renovation period that began in February, had already been accessible to minors on dates subsequent to the accident. In parallel, the outdoor facility on La Laguna street was also recently reopened and is fully operational. The Teguise City Council invested approximately 300,000 euros in the recovery of both courts.
The City Council has initiated proceedings for the contracting insurance to cover any potential compensation claims. A work protocol has been established to repair the damages, which apparently resulted from the absence of a couple of connecting nuts at the base of the hoop. Reinforcing the bases with new lock nuts is also being considered.
Repair work has been ongoing throughout the week with the aim of reopening the facilities as soon as possible, possibly during this upcoming weekend, according to municipal sources.
