The PSOE of La Aldea de San Nicolás has presented a motion requesting the Canary Islands Government to halt the concession of a fish farm on its coast.

The socialist party, currently in opposition at the City Council, calls for a plenary consensus to urge the regional executive to modify the Canary Islands Aquaculture Planning Regional Plan (approved in 2018). The objective is to exclude two preferential use zones affecting La Aldea's coastline: ZIA-GC-9, which is undergoing concession procedures, and ZIA-GC-8, which is undeveloped and located within the Guguy Special Natural Reserve.
The socialist motion specifically asks the regional government to halt the concession of ZIA-GC-9. This process already led to a protest of 1,000 people last Sunday at the port of La Aldea, expressing their rejection of the project by Gran Canaria Bass Company SL.
The proposal by Gran Canaria Bass Company SL involves the installation of 24 marine fish farming cages between Baja de Cabrera and Piedra de la Fuente, with an estimated investment of 6.82 million euros. The marine farm would have a maximum annual production capacity of 5,400 tons of sea bass from the sixth year onwards.
The PSOE believes that the current Canary Islands Government, formed by CC and PP, must find a solution and stop the concession, drawing a parallel with the halt of the Agaete macromole. Furthermore, they demand that the City Council publicly release a 15,000 euro report on the fishing and aquaculture development of the municipality, commissioned seven months ago and for which they seek transparency.
