The Gran Canaria Island Council has declared a wildfire risk alert across the island starting this Sunday, coinciding with an episode of high temperatures.

The measure, affecting areas above 400 meters in altitude, follows the forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) regarding the arrival of a warm air mass from Africa. This weather event will cause a significant temperature rise, with values potentially reaching 38 degrees early next week.
On Saturday, thermometers already recorded high figures in locations such as Tejeda, reaching 31.4 degrees, and Tasarte, with 30.3 degrees. Aemet has issued a yellow warning for temperatures that could reach 35 degrees in the highlands, as well as in the east, south, and west of the island.
The decision to activate the prevention protocol is based on the current state of the forest, which has a high accumulation of plant fuel, combined with the forecast of a low thermal inversion. The episode is also expected to affect Fuerteventura and may be accompanied by light haze across the eastern islands.
