The Plaza Número 5 of the Court of First Instance (Civil Section) of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Courts has issued eviction orders for six families residing in a building at Diego de Alcalá Street, 45 in Vecindario. These families, some with minors in their care, face the demand to vacate their homes or pay the total accumulated debt.
The tenants explain that they paid rent to the original owner until 2021, when they learned that the apartments had been seized by Sareb, known as the 'bad bank'. Faced with uncertainty about whom to pay, they decided to suspend payments. A spokesperson for those affected stated: "We stopped paying because we didn't know who or where we had to do it."
“"We stopped paying because we didn't know who or where we had to do it."
The families claim to have been victims of prolonged deception, as the former owner concealed from them that the homes had been seized since 2013. Now, Sareb is demanding debts of up to 7,000 euros, without considering the previous situation or the precarious conditions of the building, which shows significant cracks and dampness.
Despite attempts to negotiate a payment plan and obtain an updated contract to access social aid, the response from Sareb's management company has been silence or automated email replies. The situation is exacerbated by the difficulty of finding alternative housing, as the market closes its doors to them for receiving the Minimum Vital Income or for having minors and pets.
The Department of Social and Community Care of the Santa Lucía de Tirajana City Council has expressed its interest in understanding the circumstances of these families to offer them assistance, according to municipal sources, who claim to have been unaware of the situation until now.
