Sixty members of the Symphonic Band of the Villa de Ingenio Musical Society (SMVI) performed last Saturday, August 8th, a repertoire of great Spanish rock anthems at the Buen Suceso Park in El Carrizal. The show, titled ‘Gigantes’ (Giants), was conceived as a tribute to the bands and artists who have shaped several generations and was part of the festivities honoring Our Lady of Buen Suceso, Saint Roch, and Saint Haragán.
Under the baton of José Buceta, the symphonic band offered a journey through different eras and styles of national rock. The presentation of the show was handled by Obdulia Artiles, while Pedro Medina contributed the characteristic sound of the electric guitar to the repertoire.
The concert kicked off with ‘Bienvenidos’ (Welcome) by Miguel Ríos, welcoming the approximately 900 spectators who filled the park. The evening continued with hits such as ‘Cuéntame un cuento’ (Tell me a story) by Celtas Cortos, ‘Adiós papá’ (Goodbye Dad) by Los Ronaldos, ‘Salta’ (Jump) by Tequila, ‘La Flaca’ (The Skinny Girl) by Jarabe de Palo, and ‘Cadillac solitario’ (Solitary Cadillac) by Loquillo y Los Trogloditas, featuring lead vocals by Joaquín Oliván.
The show encouraged audience participation with vocal performances by Mario Lara, a trombone player in the band, who took the stage to sing ‘Sufre, mamón’ (Suffer, sucker) and ‘Voy a pasármelo bien’ (I'm going to have a good time) by Hombres G. Songs by Héroes del Silencio and Extremoduro were presented in instrumental versions, and the evening concluded with ‘Fiesta pagana’ (Pagan Party) by Mägo de Oz.
As an encore, the band reprised ‘Bienvenidos’, concluding a night that fused symphonic music and rock, and demonstrated the versatility of the Villa de Ingenio Musical Society in bringing music to diverse audiences.
