Emilio Afonso Rodríguez, honored as a Favorite Son of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and recipient of the Roque Nublo award from Gran Canaria, exemplifies adaptability and dedication. After a distinguished career as a hospitality pioneer in Maspalomas, he has found a new calling in cultivating fruit trees on his farm in Mogán.
Belonging to a family with over five centuries of history in Mogán, Afonso is descended from a lineage that includes founders of the town of Marrero in Louisiana and a Canary Islander who served as a U.S. Senator. However, his personal professional journey defines him, having witnessed and participated in the transformation of Gran Canaria from a rural area to a premier tourist destination.
Known for his solidarity, Afonso actively contributed to social and community improvements, from home renovations to fundraising for parish centers. After working in various emblematic establishments in Maspalomas, he solidified his philosophy of quality and service in restaurants like El Mundo.
Currently, at 80 years old, Emilio Afonso presides over the ‘Los Marrero’ water community and remains active on his farm, cultivating highly prized mangoes, avocados, and oranges. He takes pride in being the only one from his generation of waiters in the sixties who is still active, a testament to his work, commitment, and vitality in Mogán and Maspalomas.
