After seven decades of dedication at the helm of Bar Playa El Boya, Juan Moreno Artiles, a key figure in local hospitality, has been distinguished with the ‘Gastronomic Legacy’ award. This recognition, presented by the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council at the SBT Entrepreneurs Gala, celebrates Moreno's extensive career at the iconic establishment.
At 84 years old, Juan Moreno, originally from Telde, possesses a sharp mind and a smile that reflects a life of effort and perseverance. His early work experiences were at a shop called El Chinero, and from a young age, he learned the importance of hard work from his father, who was involved in fishing and selling products in El Pajar. In 1952, his father founded Bar Playa El Boya, marking the beginning of a family legacy.
Moreno joined the family business in 1956 and has been connected to the restaurant ever since, which is now managed by his children and grandchildren. 'El Boya', popularly known, has become a benchmark in El Pajar over its 74-year history. The entrepreneur highlights the establishment's philosophy of "flying the Canarian flag high," always sourcing fresh local fish and maintaining ties with generations of local fishermen.
The business's prosperity, according to Moreno, relies on the quality of service and customer recommendations rather than advertising. The restaurant attracts both tourists and local residents, and although it has hosted celebrity visitors, the restaurateur particularly values his "long-time customers."
Moreno expressed his deep satisfaction and joy upon receiving the award, viewing it as an "impetus" to continue working with renewed enthusiasm. He appreciates the management of his children and grandchildren, who have improved the business and ensure its continuity. He confesses to feeling "very comfortable" at the establishment, where he has spent "ninety percent" of his life.
Finally, the veteran restaurateur encourages young people to start businesses "without fear and with enthusiasm," emphasizing that success lies in "hard work" and perseverance through difficult times, as "effort always pays off" for those who strive to achieve their goals.
