Pope Francis will receive a unique rosary, handcrafted in Mogán from avocado and Canary pine wood, created by carpenter Doramas Hernández.

The municipality of Mogán, known for its tourism, has chosen to highlight its roots and values with an official gift for Pope Francis: a rosary made entirely in the locality. The 59 beads and the crucifix were designed and crafted by Doramas Hernández, considered the last wood carpenter in the municipality.
Hernández, a renowned artisan from El Hornillo, took a few days to create two rosaries, one for the Pope and another for the bishop of the Diocese of Canarias, José Mazuelos. However, the logistics required more time, including sourcing a specific drill bit from the mainland to make the beads.
This special commission from the Ayuntamiento de Mogán will be presented to the pontiff by the mayor, Onalia Bueno, upon his arrival at the Arguineguín pier. The choice of this location is significant as it has been a point of arrival for many migrants rescued by Salvamento Marítimo (Maritime Rescue).
The 53 beads for the Hail Mary prayers, each 14 millimeters in diameter, are made from avocado wood, an emblematic fruit tree of Mogán, symbolizing the municipality's identity. The 6 beads for the Our Father, slightly larger at 16 millimeters, are crafted from Canary pine wood, representing the capacity to be reborn and resist adversity, a strength characteristic of the Canary Islanders.
Mayor Onalia Bueno congratulated Doramas Hernández for his work, which will be accompanied by the presentation of two paintings by artists Marcelo Mellino and Mbaye Dieng, and a book by writer Nadia Jiménez.
Doramas Hernández expressed his joy and enthusiasm for the commission, despite the pressure it entailed. While balancing his regular work in furniture making, he dedicated time to this project. In addition to the rosary, he created an avocado wood box to house it, featuring an engraved explanation of the gift.
