The Department of Culture and the Municipal School of Music (EMM) of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council have organized the I Noé Peña Rodríguez Memorial. This event, spanning April and November, aims to preserve the legacy of Noé Peña, who served as director of the EMM, composer, and founder of A.F. Umiaya, as well as a fervent advocate for Canarian identity values.
Activities commenced on Friday, April 17, at San Fernando de Maspalomas Park with a school gathering. Students from CEIPs Marcial Franco, Dunas de Maspalomas, and San Fernando presented a display of traditional music and dances, learned in the Folklore Classroom workshop. That same evening, the park hosted a “Dancers' Gathering” organized by Parranda El Cañizo, featuring groups such as Parranda Chijeré from La Gomera, ACF Surco y Arado from Gáldar, and AFC Tajea y Torna from Las Palmas/Telde.
On Saturday, April 18, the memorial continued with a craft fair, children's play area, and traditional workshops. The day culminated with a concert and a stellar performance by AFC Umiaya, celebrating its tenth anniversary, joined by the Cultural Association Tajaraste from Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
In November, the memorial will include two film forum sessions at the Maspalomas Cultural Center, on November 11 and 12, featuring screenings of the documentaries Canarias, memoria indígena and Curanderas Canarias, tradiciones de sanación. On November 14, the Raíces 2026 Awards gala will take place, an initiative promoted by Noé Peña himself in 2019 to recognize work in ethnography and folklore. The memorial will conclude with the photographic exhibition “La piel de Gran Canaria” by Elena Fernández Alemán (Elena Feral), at the Casa Saturninita Art Center, from November 5 to 19.
