The performer Anna Castillo recently recounted how she received a wave of negative comments on social media, particularly on Twitter, when her relationship with Álvaro Mel became public. Messages such as “traitorous lesbian” emerged from some audience members, questioning her sexual orientation.
Castillo explained in an interview for RTVE Play that she found it particularly striking and hurtful to see how people who had celebrated her visibility years ago turned against her. According to the actress, these reactions invalidated her identity because she was in a relationship with a man, despite having normalized her relationship with a woman for six years.
“"To have all those people who had embraced that visibility turn against me"
The actress has argued that her sexual orientation does not depend on the gender of her partner at any given time and that a change in relationship does not erase anyone's identity. She points out that her testimony aims to highlight the rejection faced by bisexual individuals when they are in relationships with genders different from what some sectors expect.
Castillo has stated that she has always spoken about her orientation naturally, although she has never felt legitimized to lead activism. She grew up in a heterosexual environment and did not experience discrimination in her childhood, so she understood that her public role was primarily to contribute visibility.
