During the award ceremony for the Canarias Fernando Martín Menis Award, the laureate dedicated heartfelt words to Dulce Xerach, a writer and former politician who passed away last year. "Nothing that is awarded today would have had the same solidity without her," stated Menis, visibly moved.
Menis described Xerach, who was a key figure in Coalición Canaria and a driving force behind cultural spaces such as Tenerife Espacio de las Artes and Espacio El Tanque in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as the "intellectual architect" of many of his projects and dreams.
The speech also recognized the other awardees of the day, including the Fundación Canaria MAIN for Altruistic and Solidarity Actions, José Luis Padilla ‘Padylla’ for Communication, and the Gold Medals awarded to various personalities and entities such as Braulio, Fernando Berge Royo, La Casa de Galicia, Juan Espino Dieppa, Ron Arehucas, Pedro Zerolo (posthumously), Ámate, the Official Colleges of Nursing of the Canary Islands, María del Carmen Almenara, the Club Deportivo In Corpore Sano, the Danza de las Cintas de Güímar, and Antonio López Bonilla.
Martín Menis concluded his speech by emphasizing the importance of all the recipients: "I am the one who works with structures, but they are the foundations that form a just society and the pillars of human dignity," adding that they do so "with intelligent joy," like that demonstrated by the humorist José Luis Padylla.
