CB Canarias has historically focused on signing players with previous ACB experience to minimize risks. This strategy has often led to successful long-term additions to the team, exemplified by players like Aaron Doornekamp and Tim Abromaitis, and more recently, Elgin Cook.
In contrast, other clubs with fewer resources often pursue a more adventurous transfer policy, seeking out untapped talent, frequently with limited experience in minor leagues. This approach becomes even more challenging for mid-season signings, where there is no preseason and greater urgency.
However, this season, CB Canarias took a calculated risk by bringing in Patty Mills. Despite his extensive NBA career and a year without official competition, the Australian player has made a very positive impact on the team.
Patty Mills has averaged 18.4 points, 1 rebound, and 1.6 assists in just over 19 minutes per game, proving to be one of the market's standout players. Similarly, Jabari Rice, signed by MoraBanc Andorra, has matched or surpassed these figures, averaging 14.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 5.2 assists in 27:17 minutes on the court. Both players have outperformed most mid-season additions without prior national elite league experience.
“"Both Mills and Rice are currently the unknown players in the ACB who have had the best and quickest production upon arriving in Spain."
While other mid-season signings, such as Jassel Pérez for Granada or Justin Wright-Foreman for Zaragoza, have also performed well, the impact of Mills and Rice has been notably superior. Other players, like Jaden Shackelford at San Pablo Burgos or Unicaja's additions (Chase Audige, Justin Coobs, and Augustine Rubit), have not achieved the same level of adaptation and performance.
