Former volleyball player Marta Sánchez Zalfrán, a two-time Olympic medalist with Cuba, now resides in Tenerife, where she dedicates herself to coaching young talents at Club Voleibol Haris.

Marta Sánchez Zalfrán, born in Holguín in 1973, was a pivotal member of the legendary 'Morenas del Caribe', the Cuban national volleyball team that dominated global sports. With an Olympic gold in Sydney 2000 and a bronze in Athens 2004, her career was marked by success and rigorous discipline.

"For me, it has been a great honor and a great source of pride to have belonged to the golden age Cuba team, because we practically won everything."

The former athlete proudly recalls the golden era of Cuban volleyball, emphasizing the team's unity and a long-term development strategy that blended youth with experience. The demanding Cuban system led her to a high-performance center at just 12 years old and to the national pre-selection in Havana by age 14.
Currently, Sánchez lives in Tenerife, where she has found a new calling as a grassroots coach at Club Voleibol Haris. Her pedagogical approach contrasts with the strictness of her own training, prioritizing the happiness and enjoyment of the girls in every practice. Although she collaborates with the Superliga team, her passion now lies in “positively influencing” future generations.

"I hope the children of Cuba can be happy."

Despite her sporting achievements, Marta Sánchez expresses deep sorrow over the current difficult situation in Cuba. The helplessness of not being able to financially assist her country, due to the conditions of her time as an elite athlete, remains an open wound. Her greatest wish is for Cuban children to have a happy future.
