On June 24, 2006, a goal by Marcos Márquez against Linares at the Gran Canaria Stadium sealed UD Las Palmas' promotion to the Second Division, averting the club's liquidation.

Today marks twenty years since UD Las Palmas returned to the Second Division after two seasons in Segunda B. That victory, achieved in a decisive playoff, was fundamental for the club's viability, which was undergoing insolvency proceedings that could have led to its dissolution.
The win against Linares was crucial not only from a sporting perspective but also to rescue the entity from inherited ruin. Another year outside professional football would have meant dire consequences, possibly liquidation. Promotion was the only way to generate new income, rekindle fan enthusiasm, and lay the groundwork for the future.
The qualification for the playoffs was dramatic, secured on the final matchday against Lanzarote with a late goal from Davi Rodríguez. The previous round against Real Sociedad B was also resolved in the final moments with a goal from Nauzet at Anoeta. The first leg against Linares, marred by incidents involving fans and officials, ended 2-2, leaving everything to be decided in the return leg at the Gran Canaria.
Managed by Juanito, the team knew there was no room for error in front of over 30,000 spectators. Marcos Márquez's goal, following a cross from Nauzet, made it a decisive 1-0, ending the hardships and ushering in a new era for the club, which included a creditors' agreement, sponsorships, and youth academy revitalization, culminating in a return to La Liga.
