Initially, Queen Sofía was scheduled to attend the farewell ceremony, set for 2:30 PM. However, the Royal Household has confirmed that the Head of State will travel to the Canary Islands to conclude the papal visit's institutional agenda.
Felipe VI's presence in Tenerife will be the final act of a visit in which the Royal Family has played a prominent role. Kings Felipe and Letizia received the pontiff on Saturday, June 6th, upon his arrival at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport and met with him again an hour later at the Royal Palace, alongside the Princess of Asturias and Infanta Sofía.
The papal courtesy visit and the meeting with state authorities and the diplomatic corps accredited in Spain took place in that setting, where Leo XIV delivered his first official speech on Spanish territory. The following day, the King and his daughters attended the large Mass held in Plaza de Cibeles, while on Monday, June 8th, Queen Sofía participated in the prayer and tribute to the Virgen de la Almudena at the Cathedral of Santa María la Real de la Almudena.
The Royal Family's schedule will continue on Wednesday in Barcelona, where Felipe VI and Queen Letizia will attend the Eucharistic celebration at the Basílica de la Sagrada Familia.
Furthermore, it was also confirmed that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, will accompany Pope Leo XIV during his visit to the port of Arguineguín, in Gran Canaria, on June 11th. There, the pontiff will meet with migrants and with workers and volunteers involved in the care and reception of people arriving via the Atlantic Route.
The event in Arguineguín is expected to be one of the most symbolic acts of the apostolic journey, reinforcing one of the central pillars of Leo XIV's pontificate: the defense of the rights of migrants and the promotion of a humanitarian response to migratory challenges.
