The first edition of the congress Island2 Chem Conference: Bringing Tenerife & Manhattan will bring together Spanish researchers who collaborate or have collaborated with Columbia University and their US counterparts. This event will take place from tomorrow, Wednesday, September 2, to Friday, 4, at the University of La Laguna.
The inauguration will be held tomorrow, September 2, at 8:30 AM in the University's Paraninfo. It will be attended by the rector of the University of La Laguna, Francisco J. García Rodríguez; the president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo Batlle; the Minister of Innovation of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Juan José Martínez; the director of the Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology of the CSIC, Tomás Martín Ruiz; the professor from the University of Rochester and Co-chair of the organizing committee Alison Forntier; and the co-chair of the same committee, Juan Ignacio Padrón (IPNA).
This congress arises from the common academic lineage that unites two scientific communities: the chemists from Tenerife who completed their training at Columbia University and the colleagues and mentors who welcomed them in New York. Therefore, it represents a reunion where knowledge will be exchanged and collaboration across the Atlantic will be strengthened.
Speakers from 16 different entities will participate, including universities, research centers, and pharmaceutical companies: Columbia University, the University of California (UCLA), the University of Hong Kong, the University of Rochester, Michigan State University, the University of Santiago de Compostela, the University of Notre Dame, the University of Vigo, the University of La Laguna, the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ), the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), the Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology of the CSIC, Nimbus Therapeutics, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Orogen Therapeutics.
In total, there will be five plenary lectures and 12 distinguished international guest speakers. The participation of young researchers will also be accommodated through flash oral communications and poster presentations.
