The international competition will bring together twenty national teams and approximately four hundred athletes aged 17 to 18, establishing Canary Islands as a global sports benchmark. The event is supported by the Government of the Canary Islands, the Tenerife Island Council, Turismo de Tenerife, and the City Council of Puerto de la Cruz.
During the presentation, the importance of the competition in positioning the Islands as a major international stage for top-tier sporting events was highlighted. Olympic, World, and European champion Pili Peña will serve as the official ambassador for the championship.
María Rojas, Director General of Physical Activity and Sport for the Government of the Canary Islands, expressed pride in hosting a championship that will make Puerto de la Cruz the meeting point for the best youth women's water polo internationally, emphasizing the commitment to women's and grassroots sports.
Lope Afonso, Vice President and Minister of Tourism for the Tenerife Island Council, stressed the opportunity to further position the Island as an international leader in organizing major sporting events, promoting sports tourism and showcasing Tenerife's hospitality.
The mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Leopoldo Afonso, acknowledged the pride in hosting the event to promote the city internationally and demonstrate its organizational capacity, aiming for an open and welcoming city.
Yolanda Moliné, Minister of Sports for the Tenerife Island Council, noted that the Tenerife Water Sports Center is a strategic infrastructure and that hosting the World Championship confirms the Island's capability to stage major international competitions, boosting grassroots sports.
Fernando Carpena, president of the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation, expressed satisfaction in returning to Tenerife, highlighting the island's organizational prowess and the quality of the aquatic center for hosting a major international championship.
The competition will span eight days, guaranteeing at least six matches per team. It begins with a group stage from August 16 to 18, divided into two tiers based on previous World Championship performance. Groups A and B will feature the top six teams, while groups C through F will comprise the remaining twelve. The second phase will include knockout rounds and matches to determine all rankings from 1st to 20th.
This Water Polo World Championship will solidify the CDAT as a leading international facility and a key venue for the development of aquatic sports in the archipelago, with its over 6,000 square meters housing an Olympic pool, a 25-meter pool, and comprehensive infrastructure.
