“"Steps are being rigorously taken to strengthen the security of electricity supply in the Canary Islands. Today, Tenerife and La Gomera are more energy-secure islands. These plants are not a theory or empty announcements; they are real infrastructures that are already prepared to act when the system needs them."

The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands has overseen the new emergency power plant in the La Gañanía Industrial Estate, in Los Realejos, an already operational infrastructure aimed at reinforcing electricity supply security in Tenerife and La Gomera.
The facility, developed by the company Sampol Canarias, boasts a capacity of 14.8 megawatts and comprises eight generator sets. It represents an investment of nearly 11 million euros and has already secured all necessary administrative authorizations, currently undergoing testing and operational adjustments in coordination with Red Eléctrica de España.
A Ministry spokesperson also highlighted the company's work and the collaboration of the Ministry in making this installation possible, emphasizing that these actions also generate opportunities and employment on the island. During its construction, the Tenerife plant employed over a hundred people, contributing to the accelerated implementation of measures to strengthen the island's electricity system.
From the management of Sampol Canarias, it was explained that the plant is already functioning, which increases the energy security of northern Tenerife. Coordinated efforts with Red Eléctrica have ensured that the energy generated by this facility is safely integrated into the grid. This installation, along with the El Chorrillo plant, are the first two emergency infrastructures assigned to the company that are fully operational and available to the system operator.
The Los Realejos plant is part of the extraordinary measures implemented following the declaration of an energy emergency in the Canary Islands, aiming to reinforce supply security in islands with a structural generation deficit. These infrastructures are provisional and will only be activated during times of need or risk to the stability of the electrical system, while definitive solutions for the renovation of the Canarian generation park progress.
The Ministry reiterates that the Government of the Canary Islands continues to work with the Ministry and the system operator to advance towards a safer, more stable, and sustainable energy model, while also promoting the integration of renewable energies in the archipelago.
