This initiative is part of a broader plan by the island government to increase the number of areas with limited access, either through permits or eco-taxes, based on carrying capacity. For El Pijaral, known as the 'enchanted forest', the daily limit is 100 people, and it currently requires a free authorization, with a fine of 600 euros for non-compliance.

The island's Natural Environment councillor confirmed the expansion of this model, whose main objective is the protection and conservation of the island's nature, where 53% of the territory is under some form of protection. The high demand for this trail, with reservations fully booked 365 days a year and over 31,000 hikers in 2025, underscores the necessity of these measures.

In addition to El Pijaral, four other enclaves in Tenerife already apply eco-taxes: the Barranco del Infierno in Adeje, the Barranco de Masca in Buenavista del Norte, and the two trails ascending Mount Teide (La Rambleta and Telesforo Bravo). In Masca and Teide, access is free for residents, while non-residents pay 15 euros. At Barranco del Infierno, non-resident adults pay 15 euros and residents pay 5 euros.

Mass tourism, with over 7.5 million visitors in 2025, and the increase in outdoor activities post-pandemic, have led the Cabildo to intensify regulation. The Anaga area, due to its proximity to the metropolitan area, is one of the most affected by visitor influx, causing traffic problems and inconvenience to residents. Solutions such as a shuttle bus system are being explored to reduce private vehicle use.

Most reservations and permits for trails, camping areas (with tents or bivouacs), and caravans are managed through the Tenerife On platform. In 2025, over 42,000 camping spots and more than 27,000 caravan requests were registered. The island government is also working to prevent duplicate reservations and improve the management of these spaces.
