The public company Metrotenerife, under the Tenerife Island Council, has decided to name tram car 101-01 in memory of the recently deceased Ricardo Melchior. During his tenure, this guided transport system connecting Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna was launched.
The tramway, now in its 19th year of service, has transported 291 million passengers since its inauguration in 2007, averaging 25 million passengers annually. The island corporation highlighted that the tribute acknowledges the "vision, leadership, and determination" that made this infrastructure possible, transforming mobility in the island's metropolitan area.
The president of the Tenerife Island Council, Rosa Dávila, emphasized Melchior's ability to anticipate Tenerife's mobility needs and advocate for "a modern, sustainable, and efficient solution" when its viability was still doubted. Meanwhile, Mobility Councilor Eulalia García noted that the project has become a benchmark for sustainable, comfortable, and accessible mobility.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by María Isabel Cruz, widow of Ricardo Melchior, who expressed her gratitude for the initiative. Speaking on behalf of the employees, Mónica Torres, a tram driver for 16 years, highlighted the work of the 230 staff members in maintaining the service as a standard of quality and sustainability.
Also present were the vice-president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Ana Oramas; the Mobility councilors for La Laguna and Santa Cruz, Domingo Galván and Evelyn Alonso; and Pedro Ribeiro, general manager of Metrotenerife, along with worker representatives.
