US military ship docked at the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

A United States military vessel, designed for vehicle transport and logistical support, has arrived at the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife for maintenance.

The operations ship Major General Charles P. Gross, flying the US flag, is currently located in the Dársena de Los Llanos, opposite the Hacienda roundabout. This vessel, capable of transporting up to 15 battle tanks and 82 containers, arrived on the island on April 18 and is scheduled to depart on May 3.
According to the Tenerife Shipyards, the ship will undergo various maintenance tasks during its stay in the port. Neither the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the consignee Alfaship Shipping Agency, nor the shipyard itself have provided details regarding the ship's country of origin or its final destination.
Built in 1991 at the Hatlerr Marino VT shipyard in Pascagoulao, Mississippi, and acquired by the United States Army, the Major General Charles P. Gross measures 83 meters in length and 18 meters in beam, with a gross tonnage of 4,000 tons. Its design includes bow and stern ramps, allowing it to beach itself and unload up to 900 tons of vehicles and cargo in shallow coastal waters.
This is not the vessel's first visit to the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife; it was previously there in 2024 for naval repairs, also carried out by Tenerife Shipyards.
Sharing space in the Dársena de Los Llanos is also the cruise ship Douglas Mawson, which arrived on April 23 and will depart on April 25. This new expedition vessel, christened in 2025 and flying the Bahamas flag, is designed for voyages to polar regions such as Antarctica, offering scientific itineraries and accommodating between 130 and 154 passengers.
