The international response to the situation involving passengers from the MV Hondius, who disembarked in Tenerife on Sunday after contact with hantavirus-infected individuals, is showing significant disparities. Although the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a strict 42-day quarantine for close contacts, each nation is adapting this guideline based on its healthcare systems and criteria.
In the United States, for instance, a home “monitoring” system has been chosen for some passengers who left the vessel before the crisis. These individuals, from various states, are under health surveillance at home and, according to medical spokespersons, have not shown symptoms so far. A group of 17 American passengers disembarked on Sunday were flown to Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha (Nebraska), with the intention of relocating them to the National Quarantine Center at the University of Nebraska, a specialized facility for infection prevention.
The situation in the Netherlands is different. Travelers evacuated to the country who have not tested positive will undergo a 42-day home quarantine, albeit with less strict conditions, allowing them to go out with a mask and maintain social distancing. Dutch health authorities have compared this approach to managing a tuberculosis outbreak, emphasizing the good cooperation from those affected.
“"Experience teaches us that affected individuals comply very well with the measures."
Conversely, France has adopted a more rigorous stance. The prime minister announced that all contacts would be subjected to “reinforced quarantine in a hospital setting.” Similarly, the United Kingdom has confined 22 individuals from the Hondius to a hospital in Merseyside county. Germany is also transferring its passengers to a specialized infectious disease healthcare center, though it has not detailed the type of quarantine.
In Spain, all passengers from the Dutch vessel who arrived in Tenerife are confined to Gómez Ulla Hospital, which has special rooms for such cases, where they will complete their 42-day quarantine. Additionally, two patients in Alicante and Barcelona are also under hospital care, reflecting a centralized containment strategy in medical facilities.
