The Canary Islands have been the first autonomous community to exhaust all 337 MIR places offered for the training of specialist doctors in 2026, completing the allocation two days before the deadline.

The archipelago has filled all 465 Specialized Health Training (FSE) positions for this call, which also includes other healthcare professions such as Nursing, Physics, Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, and Pharmacy. The number of places offered by the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) represents the highest to date, an increase of five compared to the previous year, and includes new offerings like training in Immunology and Emergency Medicine.
Cardiology emerged as the favorite medical specialty among applicants with the highest scores in the Canary Islands. The first place chosen, by a doctor with the thirteenth best overall score out of 16,763 MIR exam candidates, was for the Cardiology Department at the Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín Hospital.
Other highly sought-after specialties in the initial selections included Anesthesiology and Resuscitation, also at the Doctor Negrín, and Cardiology at the La Candelaria Hospital in Tenerife. These were followed by Urology, Internal Medicine, and Endocrinology, distributed between the two main hospitals.
Surprisingly, Dermatology, traditionally one of the most coveted specialties, was not among the top ten choices. In the field of Primary Care, 122 positions were filled, mainly in Family and Community Medicine and Nursing. The offering in Mental Health was also significant, with 41 positions distributed across Psychiatry, Clinical Psychology, and specialized Nursing.
