The Candelaria City Council concluded this week the renovation works of the Punta Larga Urban Gym, an initiative that involved an investment of €40,948.48. The main objective was the complete replacement of sports equipment in one of the municipality's most utilized outdoor physical activity spaces.
The mayor of Candelaria, Mari Brito, highlighted the importance of this investment, noting that urban gyms are an accessible way for many people to exercise daily. Priority was given to materials resistant to coastal salinity to ensure the durability of the new equipment.
The new equipment maintains the functionality of the previous apparatus but offers higher quality and resistance. Seven new elements have been installed, including two bicycles, a rowing machine, a leg extensor, an elliptical, and a chest press, all with autonomous load regulation. Additionally, an inclusive 'workout' module has been added, featuring pull-up bars and other exercises, designed for wheelchair users, differentiating it from the equipment at the La Hornilla gym.
The intervention included excavation, civil works, foundation, layout, installation of new apparatus, removal of old equipment, and the placement of new informational signage.
Concurrently, the Department of Sports has planned the resurfacing of three outdoor physical activity spaces with shock-absorbing rubber. Following the work at Punta Larga, improvements will continue in Las Caletillas and Candelaria. The total cost for this paving across the three gyms amounts to €25,932.52.
The Councilor for Sports, Manuel Alberto González Pestano, explained the coordination of the works to ensure the completion of both equipment installation and paving is sequential, offering users a fully renovated space. These improvements are planned to be extended to ten other urban gyms in the municipality, depending on budgetary availability and citizen proposals.
