The Canary Islands are once again positioned as a global reference in cosmology. During the conferences, researchers from the Canary Islands Astrophysics Institute (IAC) presented how the region leads the search for fundamental answers about the composition and development of the cosmos.
The Quijote IAC project focuses on studying the cosmic microwave background, a primordial radiation that offers clues about the remote past of the Universe. According to the scientific head of the project, this research allows for the construction of a solid model of the Big Bang and the analysis of the large-scale structure of the cosmos, as well as the initial moments of its formation.
“"In recent decades, our understanding of the Universe has undergone a profound transformation."
A researcher from the IAC, project manager for key initiatives such as the Grantecán telescope and the future European Solar Telescope (EST), gave a talk titled “Our Place in the Universe.” Her presentation covered topics from the Solar System to the mysteries of the Big Bang, emphasizing the strategic importance of the observatories located in the Canary Islands.
The conferences, held on Wednesday, April 29, in the plenary hall of the La Orotava Town Hall, included a morning session for schoolchildren and an afternoon session open to the general public. This initiative aims to bring the relevance of scientific projects developed at Roque de los Muchachos and Teide closer to Canarian society.
The president of the Alisios Encuentro Canarias-América Cultural Association, the organizing entity, highlighted science's contribution to the cultural agenda. For the organization, the theme of the Quijote IAC experiment illustrates how the influence of Cervantes and his work extends beyond literature, impacting contemporary empiricism.
