The Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands has awarded the contract to expand the capacity of the GC-1 between La Estrella and Las Terrazas, in Telde.

The project, awarded to a joint venture, aims to resolve the bottleneck at this strategic point of the Gran Canaria road network. The work will add a fourth lane in both directions, improving access to La Mareta, La Estrella, La Pardilla, and Bocabarranco.
With a 12-month execution period, construction is set to begin before the summer. The tender process prioritized technical solutions that allow for partial traffic flow, minimizing disruption for the more than 160,000 vehicles that use this road daily.

"It is very good news that several entities have submitted bids for the GC-1 capacity expansion, a priority action that will finally allow for construction on Gran Canaria's main road in 2026."

This improvement addresses a long-standing request from local residents and the Telde City Council, particularly following the temporary closure of access to La Pardilla last year. To reduce traffic impact, night work is being considered.
