The sanitation renovation on Cayetana Manrique Street, located in the Guanarteme neighborhood of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, has been postponed again, marking a fifth extension that pushes its completion to July 2026.

The project, initially scheduled for three months, has drawn criticism from the municipal opposition, which points to a "lack of planning" by the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council. This situation affects an area already grappling with mobility issues, traffic changes, and inconveniences for local residents and businesses.

"We are talking about an intervention that directly impacts the daily life of the neighborhood, with closed streets, traffic diversions, access difficulties to garages, changes in bus routes, and a direct impact on residents, businesses, and public transport users."

The intervention on Cayetana Manrique Street is crucial for Guanarteme, a neighborhood that has experienced significant demographic and tourist growth in recent decades, increasing the need to update its sanitation infrastructure. The prolonged works result in closed streets, traffic diversions, difficulties accessing garages, and changes in public transport routes, affecting the daily routine of the community.
The complaint about this extension coincides with recent neighborhood mobilizations, expressing discontent over the loss of identity and the decision-making process affecting Guanarteme. The situation on Cayetana Manrique Street is seen as another symptom of the tension between urban development, pending works, and the demand for greater citizen participation in environmental planning.
Another pending project in the area is the rehabilitation of the old Cine Guanarteme, proposed as a future cultural and community space. Despite expectations, a master plan for the property has not yet been presented. Its management is linked to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria's bid for the European Capital of Culture 2031. The opposition notes that this project remains stalled with no visible progress for residents.
The political group also links the delays in sanitation works to the urban planning debate and projected residential growth in the area. Emphasis has been placed on the need for any new development to be preceded by adequate planning in areas such as mobility, sanitation, facilities, social services, health centers, schools, and green spaces, to ensure harmonious coexistence.
