The Councilor for Mobility of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council, José Eduardo Ramírez, has confirmed that a request from residents of Cayetana Manrique street, in the Guanarteme neighborhood, is being studied. Last March, residents expressed the need to decrease heavy vehicle traffic, especially buses from the Global company, through their street.
To make an informed decision, data will be requested from Global regarding the number of passengers using the stops located on this street. Concurrently, Guaguas Municipales has been contacted, as a change in the interurban transport route could divert some of its users to this local service. The aim is to analyze passenger profiles, paying special attention to the elderly who might face difficulties with a change of stops, and to assess the capacity of municipal lines to absorb a potential increase in demand.
Ramírez emphasized the complexity of the measure, stating that it is not an immediate solution and requires thorough study to avoid creating new problems for other public transport users. The area is a significant attraction for citizens, housing the Auditorio, a shopping center, and Las Canteras beach, in addition to being a transfer point towards the north of the island. "We need to have information to make a decision that solves one problem without creating another for others," said the councilor.
Furthermore, the Mobility Councilor reported that the new low-emission zone in Alcaravaneras is expected to be operational by the end of the year. During the initial months, no sanctions will be applied to allow citizens to adapt to the new traffic restrictions. This zone will be incorporated into the mobility plan to prevent potential legal challenges that could halt its implementation, as has occurred in other Spanish cities.
