To mark the celebration of San Juan Night this Tuesday, June 23rd, the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has deployed a special security, prevention, and surveillance operation. The primary objective is to prevent bonfires from being lit within the municipality, particularly around Las Canteras beach.
The security operation will involve enhanced coordination between personnel from the Local Police, the National Police, Civil Protection, Red Cross, and various municipal services. Both land and sea surveillance will be implemented to ensure the safety of attendees.
Civil Protection and the Municipal Cleaning Service, in collaboration with the Mediation and Coexistence Unit (UMEC) of the Local Police, will be responsible for locating and removing accumulated materials that could be used for burning, as bonfires are expressly forbidden.
The Local Police will deploy the Local Protection and Support Unit (UPAL) for specific attention to minors. Concurrently, the Operational Intervention and Support Group (GOIA-UE) will patrol the promenade to maintain order.
The Red Cross will have a boat available for potential maritime emergencies. Additionally, a Violet and Rainbow Point will be established to offer information and support against possible sexist aggressions during the events of the Foundational Festivities.
The security and mobility plan will extend to the area around the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium and Las Canteras beach, where events such as the delivery of Honors and Distinctions, a fireworks display, a concert by Álvaro de Luna, and a street party will take place.
Due to the expected crowd, punctual traffic restrictions are anticipated. Avenues such as Príncipe de Asturias and Industrial José Sánchez Peñate, as well as streets Simancas, Pavía, and Numancia, may be closed to traffic. Access to El Rincón from the GC-2 highway towards Gáldar could also be closed if the influx of people warrants it.
Regarding cleaning efforts, the Municipal Cleaning Service and the Ciudad de Mar service have organized an operation involving 76 workers and 23 vehicles. Restoration tasks on Las Canteras beach, the promenade, and adjacent roads will be carried out between 01:30 and 05:30 AM on June 24th.
Finally, ten ecological islands will be installed to facilitate selective waste collection, and the promenade will be reinforced with 46 additional containers for waste management.
