According to official data provided by the Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, the Canarias ProHogar program processed 351 applications in the province of Las Palmas and 320 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. These figures contrast with the annual report from the General Council of the Judiciary, which recorded 1,426 eviction proceedings during the same period.
The majority of these evictions, totaling 1,129, were caused by the inability of tenants to pay rent. Additionally, 224 cases involved mortgage foreclosures. The regional program, part of the Canary Islands Housing Plan 2020-2025, aims to provide advice and mediation to prevent the loss of housing or to find alternative living solutions.
The assistance process begins with an individual assessment phase to determine if the family unit meets the eligibility requirements. Once accepted, mechanisms are activated such as requesting contract extensions, mediation with financial institutions, or evaluating social rental offers, all within a framework of coordination between the different public administrations.
