The confrontation between the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council and the Municipal Cleaning Service has escalated this Monday, amidst negotiations concerning the service's conversion into a municipal company. The company committees have denounced what they describe as a "backroom meeting" and a "no-show" by the councilor for the area, Héctor Alemán, and the manager, Antonio Marcelino Santana.
According to the workers' representatives, they arrived at the service's headquarters in Las Torres two hours before the meeting scheduled for 08:00 AM to prepare the negotiation of minimum services for the strike announced for this Friday. There, they found the councilor and manager "holding a backroom meeting" with other workers without prior notice. Subsequently, at the agreed meeting time, they were allegedly given a "no-show" as the same action was being carried out at Juan Pablo II park.
The situation became further complicated when the councilor asked the committee representatives to come up and speak with him an hour later. This timing coincided with the workers' call to the media to provide details about Friday's strike. Furthermore, journalists already inside the Service's facilities were expelled, forcing the workers to make their statements on the street.
“"They gave us a no-show because they were doing the same with another part of the service."
