The Ministry of Culture has initiated procedures to declare the Port Silo of Santa Cruz de Tenerife a Site of Cultural Interest, ensuring the protection of this unique industrial building and stopping its planned demolition.

The infrastructure, owned by the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is the only example of a port-type silo currently preserved in Spain. Its potential demolition had raised concerns, leading the Ministry of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture of the Canary Islands Government and the College of Architects of Tenerife to request its protection.

"The initiation of the file by the Ministry will entail the protection of the silo and, therefore, its demolition will not be possible."

This building, over 30 meters high, was designed by Joaquín Soriano y Benítez de Lugo in the 1960s. Its rationalist industrial architecture makes it a unique piece within the National Network of Silos and Granaries, standing out for its function, modular serialization, and geometric clarity.
The silo still retains essential parts of its machinery, making it a valuable testimony to Spain's post-war autarky and self-sufficiency policy, offering a key perspective on the country's contemporary socioeconomic and technical history.
The initiation of the file, once published in the BOE (Official State Gazette), will activate maximum provisional protection under Law 16/1985, of June 25, on Spanish Historical Heritage. Subsequently, a period of public information will open to evaluate technical reports and allegations, culminating in the proposal's elevation to the Council of Ministers for its definitive declaration as a BIC.
